Japan's Nikka Yoichi 20 whisky, produced at the Yoichi Distillery near Sapporo on the northerly Hokkaido island, has recently been crowned the world's best single malt whisky in the World Whiskies Awards 2008, beating its perennial Scottish rivals to the top prize. Experts put the win down to Yoichi 20's traditional production methods and more variable climate than in Scotland.
The home of this great whisky, the Nikka Yoichi Distillery, is open to visitors for tours and tastings daily from 9:00am until 17:00. Yoichi , is about 50km west of Hokkaido’s capital city Sapporo, on around the same Latitude as the middle of New York State, Toronto – Canada and Vladivostok - Russia. Yoichi, surrounded on three sides by mountains and one side by the Sea of Japan coast, is blessed with the things that really matter to great whisky.
