The most common rail pass is the “Japan Rail Pass”. With a Japan Rail Pass you can travel on almost all JR (Japan Railways) trains all over Japan including the fast train “Shinkansen”. This is absolutely the cheapest way of transportation in Japan. As a thumb rule it is worth buying a 7 day Japan Rail Pass if you within 7 days are traveling from Tokyo to Kyoto and back or similar distance.
The pass is valid for 7, 14 or 21 days and can be bought for the Ordinary class (2nd class) or Green Car (1st class). With the pass you can also make seat reservations for free, and we recommend you to make seat reservation. Children under the age of 6 are traveling for free, and children between 6 and 11 years are paying half price.

Please pay attention to the fact that the Japan Rail Pass can only be bought outside Japan. For prices please see attached price sheet.
