Rikuchu Coast National Park is located 15 minutes from Miyako station.
Here we can experience the harmony of white stone beaches and rich blue sea.
In the Towada-Hachimantai National Park you can find Japan’s only aspete caldera lake, surrounded by numerous hot-springs .
In a less than 2 hours bus ride from Ichinoseki station you can reach the Kurikoma Quasi-National Park, that is a mountain park which remains largely untouched.
The Hayachine Quasi-National Park is home to an indigenous, edelweiss-like plant.
You can also enjoy the nature in the Sotoyama-Hayasaka Heights Prefectural Nature Park, Hanamaki Onsen Resort Prefectural Nature Park, and the Yuda Onsen Valley Prefectural Nature Park where you can also enjoy the hot springs.
500 Buddhist Disciples(Gohyaku Rakan) These wooden, varnished statues displayed at Ho’onji Temple are considered magnificent example of Japanese art .
The most exciting site in Iwate prefecture though is Hiraizumi.
Things to see in Hiraizumi:
Chūson-ji Temple
Hiraizumi's largest and most famous temple, renowned for its Golden Hall (Konjikido) which is housed inside a large glass case. The shrine is decorated with golden lacquer and pearls, and there are three big Buddha images. Easy access from the station. Entrance fee: 800 JPY
Mōtsu-ji Temple
The second of Hiraizumi's two large temples, known for its Heian-era Pure Land Garden dating to the end of VIIIth century. Entrance fee:500JPY
Takkoku no Iwaya Bishamon-do
A unique cave temple about 30 minutes bike ride out of town. It is the 5th incarnation of the temple since it was established in 801. It is dedicated to Bishamon the god of war, the place to pray for peace. Also at this site is the Ganmen Daibutsu a giant stone carving of Budda, but only the head remains after an earthquake destroyed the body.
