Miyagi Prefecture has a total area of 7,285 square kilometers and it is home to approximately 2,370,000 people.
It is bordered by the Pacific Ocean on the east, and the waters off the coast are noted for their rich fishing grounds, as well as lovely sightseeing spots such as
the islands of Matsushima.
With roughly one million inhabitants,
Sendai is by far the largest city in the Tohoku Region and one of the country's fifteen largest cities. It is known as the
City of Trees with rows of zelkova and gingko trees, with natural surroundings such as the Hirose River and Mt. Aobayama. You can enjoy walking around historic places and shopping malls.
The modern city of Sendai was founded around the year 1600 by Date Masamune, one of feudal Japan's most powerful lords. Many of Sendai's tourist attractions are related to Masamune and his family.

The small town is also known for Zuiganji, one of the most important Zen temples of the Tohoku Region.
Less than an hour northeast of the city center lies the town of Matsushima, whose bay is dotted by pine clad islets and is known for one of Japan's three most scenic views. This area is connected to the great haiku poet Matsuo Basho and offers delicious cuisine.When Basho visited Matsushima on June 25, 1689, he wrote that Matsushima was the greatest scenery in Japan in his book of travels in the Tohoku region.
The small town of Matsushima is also known for
Zuiganji, one of the most important Zen temples of the Tohoku Region.
There are various cruise trips, including cruises around the islands in the bay starting and returning to the
Matsushima Sightseeing Pier, and regular sightseeing lines to
Shiogama City.
A good way to enjoy the bay is to get on a cruise boat. There are round trips starting and ending at Matsushima and boats from Matsushima to the nearby city of Shiogama. Longer cruises will get you to the more remote areas of
Oku-Matsushima which are less spoiled by industrial and urban development.
You can experience nature and country life
Osaki, Kurikoma and Tome area.The northern area of Miyagi Prefecture is a vast agricultural area. It is the center of agriculture, forestry and stock farming in "Food Kingdom Miyagi." Experience rice farming, vegetable cultivation, local craft making, while enjoying exchanges with local people. Hot spring resorts such as Naruko, Hanayama and Kurikoma will become unforgettable.
It is also worth visiting
Zao/Okama area. The symbol of Zao is a crater lake with a perimeter of about 1.5 kilometers and a water depth of about 25 meters. It is also called "Goshikinuma"(lake of five colors) because the color changes several times a day depending on the angle of the sunlight.
You can leisurely soak in the hot spring at the foot of the
Zao mountains.
The
Ishinomaki and Kinkasan areas have plentiful catches of sea squirts, sea urchins and saury, Minami Sanriku and Kesennuma areas have catches of shark fin, tuna and abalone. Enjoy the gourmet food each area has to offer.
