Aomori is the northernmost prefecture on Japan's main island Honshu. Like much of Tōhoku, the Aomori region remains dominated by traditional industries such as farming, forestry, and fishing. The prefecture is especially famous for it`s apple.
The Namioka area produces more than 90 percent of Aomori City’s apples. They are comparatively small in size due to late-blooming apple flowers.
Aomori City is also Japan’s top blackcurrants producing region.
The region is also famous for its scallops - Mutsu Bay is the ideal habitat for scallops and has long been known as a prime fishing ground.
Hakkoda Beef, the meat of Hakkoda Cattle, a rare, region-specific breed of “Japanese shorthorn,” is primarily red meat, a natural beef allowing one to experience a rich natural flavor and the genuine taste of beef.
The Hakkoda Mountains in Aomori provide excellent hiking in the warmer seasons.
Prefectural capital is Aomori City. Íf you visit Aomori, you should take a tour in the Gappo Park, which is a historical seaside park facing Aomori Bay, and features stone monuments to Takuboku Ishikawa and others, and has a number of stone tablets with inscribed haiku.
Sannai-Maruyama Ruins site contains ruins from the early-to-mid Jomon period and is Japan’s largest such site. Artifacts of a high technical level have been unearthed, including flat figurines, gigantic wooden columns, plain fabrics, and lacquerware.
At Moya Hills you can find a list of recreational facilities, that are enjoyable throughout the four seasons, Moya Hills features the “Hills Thunder” roller luge, auto camping, and tennis in summer, and in winter features the enjoyment of skiing and snowboarding.
The former regional capital city, Hirosaki, offers a nice castle which becomes a major cherry blossom viewing spot each spring.
