Home to the famous Akita komachi rice and many sake breweries,Akita is a large prefecture at the Sea of Japan coast in the northern Tohoku Region. The prefectural capital is Akita City. The city shares the same latitude with Beijing, Madrid and New York. The prefecture can be easily reached by Akita Komachi Shinkansen, that was opened in 1997.
Among Akita's main attractions are its natural beauty of mountains and the sea, hot springs and the traditional villages.
In Akita prefecture you can visit the famous Tazawako(Lake Tazawa), that is a caldera lake, and the deepest lake in Japan.
One of Akita`s highlights is Kakunodate, which preserves one of Japan's most interesting samurai districts. It is a popular destination for hanami, the observation of the cherry blossoming.
Towada/Hachimantai National Park embraces the mystic Lake Towada and the natural beauty of the Hachimantai Area.
On the border of Akita and Yamagata prefecture there is a popular hiking destination, Chokai mountain, that is 2,236 meter tall.
Another interesting attraction is located in the Oga Peninsula.Lake Hachirogata was located here, and is used to be the second largest brackish water lake in Japan, having a surface area of approximately 22,000 ha. but due to a land reclamation project there is only 4,564 ha of water surface left.
Also famous for the Shitsu-like dog Akita Inu.
